Expect cool, cloudy weather for much of Memorial Day weekend

The cool, partly cloudy weather San Diego has been experiencing for weeks will last through the Memorial Day Weekend as chilly winds continue to arrive from the Pacific.

“It looks like we’ll see some sunshine every afternoon throughout the weekend, but the mornings will stay in a cool pattern,” said Dan Gregoria, a forecaster for the National Weather Service in San Diego.

The region has been experiencing a lot of “May Gray” due to persistent onshore winds. Those winds are blowing over water that’s in the low 60s, which helps with the development of low clouds. The pattern can last well into June, when it would be referred to as “June gloom.”

Forecasters say daytime highs will reach 68-69 degrees Friday in San Diego, and possibly a bit warmer inland. Temperatures will rise another two degrees on Sunday and Monday. But the sporadic clouds and winds will often make the air seem to be cooler.

It’s also possible that the clouds will produce fleeting periods of drizzle, at least into Saturday.

Solspot.com says the surf will be small Friday and Saturday, but will increase a bit on Sunday and morning. Sea surface temperatures are in the 60-64 degree range.
