Desert Trip fest in Indio set with Dylan, Stones, more

Share

Almost since their inceptions in 1999 and 2007, respectively, the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals at the Empire Polo Club in Indio have drawn 20 percent of their annual audiences from San Diego County. Come October, we’ll find out if classic-rock fans from San Diego will turn out in equal numbers for what is being unofficially billed as the “Concert of the Century” by some, “Oldchella” by others, and “Desert Trip” in promotional materials describing the three evening concerts.

No matter the name, the lineup for Oct. 7-9 outdoor concerts in Indio features a remarkable collection of classic-rock icons who have never all before appeared at the same music event.

The performance roster includes 1969 Woodstock veterans Neil Young and The Who, and two legendary acts — Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones — that have performed in recent years at San Diego’s Petco Park. Rounding things off are Bob Dylan and former Pink Floyd mainstay Roger Waters. Since late 2014, the Stones touring lineup has featured top San Diego jazz-funk saxophonist Karl Denson, who in September will perform with his band at the 2016 edition of KAABOO Del Mar.

San Diego music fans unable to attend this fete in Indio have a few local alternatives. By coincidence, The Who will perform May 27 at Valley View Casino Center, while Dylan is performing two sold-out shows at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay in mid-June (although both are sold out)..

By coincidence, AEG/Goldenvoice, the producer of Coachella, Stagecoach and, now, Desert Trip, owns a controlling interest in Valley View Casino Center and exclusively books all shows at Humphreys. McCartney and Waters have both headlined previous editions of the Coachella festival, which typically draws about 100,000 people per day for each of its two consecutive three-day weekends of music in April.

Hotel, shuttle and upscale camping packages are also available for the three-day concert in Indio, starting Monday at 10 a.m.
