California Highway Patrol officers chased a purple Honda Accord going 115 mph from Orange County nearly to Oceanside Tuesday, then caught the driver who crashed and tried to run.

An officer tried to pull over the driver for speeding north of San Clemente about 11:30 a.m., CHP Officer Robert Catano said.

The driver accelerated away, heading south on Interstate 5. Pursuing officers noted at 11:40 a.m. they were passing Cristianitos Road, just north of the San Diego County line. At some point the Accord was going 115 mph, Catano said.

About 10 minutes later, the driver lost control of the Accord and crashed through a fence south of the Camp Pendleton Coaster train station, Catano said. The car skidded about 50 feet down an embankment.

Catano said the driver tried to run, but was caught within minutes. He had no information about whether the man was injured.
