An 18-year-old Escondido woman badly injured in a rock-climbing fall in Phoenix a week and a half ago has died.

The mother of Makayla “Kayla” Castro wrote in a blog post Sunday that her daughter had died from her injuries.

“She fought so hard, but her injuries were just too much for her to overcome,” Allison Castro wrote. She said her daughter was her best friend and “the best person I have ever met.”

Makayla Castro, a 2015 San Pasqual High School graduate, fell between 60 to 100 feet from Camelback Mountain on April 20 as horrified witnesses watched. She was raced to a trauma center in critical condition.

She was a freshman at Grand Canyon University, a private Christian college in Phoenix.

In the online posting, her mother thanked friends and family for their prayers.

“God wanted her to be with him to be his newest angel,” she wrote. “He has brought her the ultimate in comfort, joy and peace.”

As her family faced mounting medical expenses, Escogelato in Escondido held a fundraiser and people donated nearly $30,000 to a GoFundMe account as of Sunday evening.
