Watch new Beatles video for “While My Guitar Gently Weeps’

August 28 will mark the 51st anniversary of The Beatles' 1965 performance at Balboa Stadium, the Fab Four's sole San Diego concert.

Friday will see a sold-out San Diego performance at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay by former Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr and his All-Star Band. The group's keyboardist, Santana alum Gregg Rolie, is a former Poway resident.

And Thursday, July 14, will mark the 10th anniversary celebration of "Love," Cirque du Soleil's lavish, multi-media Beatles' tribute at The Mirage in Las Vegas. It features portions of 120 Beatles classics that were meticulously re-orchestrated into 27 music pieces by Sir George Martin, the band's longtime producer. (Martin died on March 8 at the age of 90.)

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of "Love," Cirque du Soleil" has released a new video of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," the classic George Harrison song that appeared on the 1968 double-album "The Beatles" (which is often referred to by fans as "The White Album").

This new version is fascinating for several reasons.

It focuses on Harrison's singing and acoustic guitar playing. It also dispenses with the vocal and instrumental contributions to the song by the other Beatles, as well as dispensing with Eric Clapton's famed guitar solo. What results is striking, an instantly familiar song recast in a fresh, near-chamber-music setting that places Harrison's tender vocals in a new light.

Some fans are hoping Starr and fellow former Beatle Paul McCartney will attend the 10th anniversary "Love" performance on July 14th in Las Vegas, where both were on hand (along with George Martin and his audio engineer son, Giles) for the show's debut a decade ago, along with John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, and Harrison's widow, Olivia. Neither of the former Beatles appears to have anything scheduled that day, so a reunion of the two in Sin City is certainly possible.
