Now the adventurous Escondido company rolls out a staging of the punchy, provocative and very hard-rocking musical “American Idiot,” built on the songs of Green Day. And maybe best of all: The theater is planning a singalong performance for July 7.
The potent show, which takes its name from the Bay Area neo-punk band’s politically charged 2004 album, hit Broadway in 2010 and earned two Tony Awards plus a nomination as best musical.
The Broadway production came through town on tour in 2013, but Patio’s will be the first locally sourced professional staging.
The show centers on the young friends Johnny (portrayed by Kevin Phan), Tunny (Tony Percuoco), and Will (Dane Rozakas), who feel stifled by their suburban lives and react by taking very divergent (and, in their own ways, very difficult) life paths.
Director Matt FitzGerald’s cast also includes Taylor Henderson, Madison Hansmeyer, Pamela Basurto, Jason Schlarmann, Peter Armado, Matt Sayre, Lauren Turner, Cheyenne Bickle, Andre Urbano, Tasha Baenisch, Bobby Villegas, Chris Braden, Catie Taylor, Madeline Armosino, Caitlin Appolito and Tirza Pletcher.
The show, which opens tonight (June 24), will unfold in a different venue from the company’s usual digs: It goes up in the outdoor amphitheater at Escondido’s Kit Carson Park.
“American Idiot” runs through July 9.
