Humidity to stay high in San Diego into Friday

The humidity will remain uncomfortably high in San Diego and other coastal cities well into Friday. And there’s a small chance that a stray thunderstorm or two will pop up over the weekend.

“We still have a marine layer, so there’s lots of moisture in the air,” said Phil Gonsalves, a forecaster at the National Weather Service. “But we tend to feel it more when the air temperature is above normal, as it is now.”

San Diego’s normal daytime high in late July is 75 degrees. Temperatures will be slightly above that through Friday, making the humidity more noticeable.

Gonsalves said that the seasonal monsoon is likely to return on Friday and Saturday. That could spark thunderstorms in the mountains and possibly across inland valleys. There’s a small chance that the thunderstorms will get push west, to the coast.

Late Wednesday morning, the California Independent System Operator, the agency in charge of overseeing the state’s power grid, issued its second statewide Flex Alert of the summer.

Electricity users are urged to conserve power, especially during peak demand hours between 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
