Hear Andra Day & Jessica Sanchez sing out for Clinton
San Diegan Day sang ‘Rise Up’ Tuesday at the DNC, while San Diegan Sanchez has recorded new song, ‘Stronger Together’
San Diego-bred singers Andra Day, 31, and Jessica Sanchez, 20, are making their presence felt at this week’s ongoing Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. You can watch Day’s stirring performance below, followed lower in this article by an audio track of Sanchez doing a song especially written for the DNC by two Grammy Award-winners.
Day, who earned two Grammy nominations this year for her debut album, performed her inspirational song, “Rise Up,” Tuesday night at the DNC, accompanied by piano and a drum ensemble.
She did “Rise Up” immediately after a stirring plea for love, unity and respect from Mothers of the Movement, the nine mothers of nine young African-Americans whose widely publicized deaths sparked a national debate about race relations and the interactions between the police and some of the minority communities they serve.
“Such an honor to perform tonight #DemsInPhilly #DemConvention,” Day Tweeted Tuesday from Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, Sanchez — the Chula Vista-bred singer who in 2012 won second-place honors on “American Idol” — is the featured vocalist on “Stronger Together,” an inspirational song named after one of the key slogans in Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
“Stronger Together” was co-written by Bruce Roberts and Grammy Award-winners Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Carole Bayer Sager. So far as can be determined, the recording has not yet been played in full at the DNC, but that could change over the next two days. The dancer-friendly song t includes such couplets as: Don't you know that we are stronger together / Stronger, yes we are / So much more when we're united together / One mind, one soul, one heart.
“Honored to do this song for @HillaryClinton and the #DNC,” Sanchez, 20, tweeted Wednesday.
By coincidence, Day and Sanchez have both performed at the White House for President Barack Obama, although at separate events.
