50 guns turned in at gift card exchange
OTAY MESA —
Reluctant gun owners turned over 50 unwanted firearms to San Diego police Saturday in exchange for gift cards.
The haul included 22 handguns, 13 rifles, 14 shotguns and one assault rifle, police said. The exchange took place at the Casa Familiar Civic Center at the Southwestern College Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa.
Participants were given $75 gift cards for rifles and shotguns, $50 gift cards for handguns and $100 gift cards for assault weapons. The money for the gift cards was donated by the District Attorney’s Office and the San Diego Police Foundation.
