Motorcyclist’s foot nearly severed in collision

An 84-year-old motorcycle rider suffered a nearly severed foot when he was hit by a car Saturday night, Oceanside police said.

He was headed east on Mission Avenue near Fireside Street when the sedan driver turned left across his path to enter a parking lot about 6:30 p.m., police Lt. Leonard Cosby said.

The car clipped the motorcycle’s left side, knocking the rider to the ground and causing a deep cut across his left ankle, Cosby said. He said the driver, a woman possibly in her 60s, told officers she didn’t see the motorcycle until it was too late.

The motorcyclist was airlifted to a trauma center. Cosby said the injury was major and the man seemed likely to lose his foot. No update on his condition was available.
