Juan Gabriel scored his breakthrough hit “No Tengo Dinero” (“I Have No Money”) in 1971. Its title now seems ironic for one of the most successful singers, songwriters and band leaders Mexico has ever produced.

Equally adept at performing pop and mariachi music, the man hailed as “El Divo de Juarez” has more than 1,000 songs to his credit. He has penned hits for an array of other artists. And, like few of his peers in Latin music, he has sometimes shown an elastic approach when singing about issues of gender and age.

Having recovered from a serious case of pneumonia in 2014, the 66-year-old legend kicks off his 22-city Juan Gabriel MeXXico Es Todo 2016 Tour on Friday at Valley View Casino Center. He’ll be accompanied by a 50-piece ensemble, 10 singers and 20 dancers. As on his previous tours, he is likely to pay tribute to Lola Beltrán, the pioneering mariachi singer long cited by Gabriel as one of his key musical influences.
