C.V. law regulating RVs begins May 1

A law regulating RVs and how long they are parked on the street is going into effect next month in Chula Vista.

Beginning May 1, the city will enforce a law that the City Council passed last year regulating recreational vehicles through the use of permits.

The new RV law restricts people from parking their vehicles on city streets unless they have a 24-hour permit.

RVs are defined as motorized recreational vehicles or vehicles designed to tow, used primarily for recreational purposes, including camp trailers, fifth-wheel travel trailers, trailer coaches, folding camper trailers, mobile homes and off-road/all-terrain vehicles.

City staff said the ordinance was designed to balance the needs of RV owners while addressing concerns from residents and business owners regarding traffic, health and safety.

Some of the issues surrounding RVs, which prompted the new law, include RVs being parked for longer than the permitted 72 hours, vehicles blocking a driver’s sight as well as access to driveways and bike lanes.

Other concerns include the dumping of trash and the eyesores the vehicles create in the neighborhoods.

City staff said the problem areas include Fourth and Orange avenues near Anita Street and West Frontage Road between Anita and Main streets.

Signs about the RV ordinance are already posted at every entrance to the city.

Chula Vista police officers are continuing to provide courtesy notices to recreational vehicle owners.

Rules for permits include that they cannot exceed 24 hours and no more than three consecutive permits can be issued to any one address for any 72-hour period.

In addition, no more than 72 permits can be issued to any one address within one calendar year.

Cost of the daily permit is $2, and all other parking restrictions apply to the permitted vehicle. Vehicles without a valid permit will be cited and fined a minimum of $100.

Beginning May 1, residents will be able to buy a permit online or in person at the finance department.
