A motorist who died when his pickup flew off a Chula Vista road and hit two parked vans Sunday night has been identified as 26-year-old Luke James Warner, authorities said.

The Medical Examiner’s Office said Warner was thrown from his pickup in the 8:30 p.m. crash on C Street near Fourth Avenue.

Witnesses told police they saw a Toyota truck going too fast east on C Street, swerve out of control and go airborne. The pickup landed, rolled and hit two vans parked along the road.

A man had one of the vans jacked up and was working under it when it was hit by the pickup. The impact knocked the van off the jack and the vehicle fell onto the man. He was saved from being crushed because much of the van’s weight fell onto a tire lying flat near him, Chula Vista police Capt. Lon Turner said. He said the man was injured, but is expected to survive.

Other men who had been helping him with the repairs quickly jacked up the van again to get it off him, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Medical Examiner’s Office did not know where Warner lived.
