Oceanside garage fire spreads to house

Share

Fire that erupted in the garage of an Oceanside home Saturday evening caused extensive damage as it spread to the attic, a trailer and a pickup.

A man who was home on Seasons Road at the time was not injured.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, but it is considered accidental, Oceanside fire Battalion Chief Peter Lawrence said.

Several people called 911 about 5:30 p.m. to report the garage on fire. By the time firefighters got there, flames had spread to a pickup and trailer parked in the driveway, Lawrence said.

Firefighters doused the vehicles before they could get to the house. Crews on the roof cut holes for the smoke and heat to escape while other firefighters worked at putting out the flames and carrying out household items before they could be damaged, Lawrence said.

He said the fire was so intense it burned through a wall into the house and into the attic.

It took more than two dozen firefighters from Oceanside, Vista and Carlsbad about 30 minutes to control the fire.

The Red Cross was called to help the three men who rented the home. Lawrence said the house won’t be liveable until it’s rebuilt.

Damage to the house, the trailer and truck was estimated at $240,000.
