Monsoon could bring showers to San Diego

Strong monsoonal moisture will flow into San Diego County from Baja California Wednesday through Saturday, triggering thunderstorms in the region’s mountains and deserts and possibly bringing sporadic rain to coastal areas.

The monsoon isn’t as powerful or dynamic as the dying tropical storm that brought heavy rains to San Diego a week ago. But it appears that the monsoon could have enough strength to flow west, over the mountains, reaching the coastal areas during the final week of July.

San Diego is experiencing the wettest July in history. So far, Lindbergh Field has recorded 1.71 inches of rain since July 1st. Typically, the airport records only 0.02 inches during the entire month. The thunderstorms that hit a week ago did everything from cancel a San Diego Padres game to briefly trap hikers in a canyon in Torrey Pines. The thunderstorms also produced 2,275 lightning strikes across the county, including one that sparked a short-lived brush fire in Del Mar.
