An armed attack at a funeral home in downtown Tijuana early Tuesday left two people dead and nine injured, authorities reported.

Authorities received the initial call at 12:42 a.m., of a body on the sidewalk outside Funeraria La Esperanza on Calle Miguel Negrete, according to a statement Tuesday afternoon from the Baja California Attorney General’s Office.

One of the dead was identified as David Roberto Aguilar Landaverry, 25, who was found shot in the abdomen and lying on the sidewalk outside the funeral home. The other victim was an unidentified male in his mid-20s, who was shot in the back and died later at a local hospital.

At the scene, authorities found 25 casings from a AK-47 semi-automatic rifle.

No further details of the attack were immediately available. The Tijuana newspapers Frontera and El Mexicano reported that the victims were attending a wake for two brothers shot last week at a tire shop in Tijuana’s Colonia Independencia.

Since Jan. 1, Tijuana has registered more than 400 homicides, according to the Baja California Attorney General’s Office. Authorities have attributed much of the violence to rivalries among neighborhood drug dealers, but have not stated a motive for this latest shooting.
