California Highway Patrol officers are looking for a driver that fled a multi-vehicle rollover crash that killed a 22-year-old man on Interstate 5 in Encinitas Sunday.

The Chula Vista resident was headed north in a 2014 Acura ILX when his car overturned and skidded to a stop in the middle of the highway near Encinitas Boulevard, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

A 2000 Toyota Tacoma, also headed north, smashed into the overturned car just before 3 a.m. The driver did not stop, Bettencourt said. A third car, driven by a 30-year-old woman of San Diego, was also involved in the crash, but it’s unclear which car she hit. She was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The Acura’s driver was dead when emergency crews arrived. His name was not released. Authorities are investigating if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

Bettencourt said officers are looking for the runaway driver, who was described as a white 33-year-old man, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 170 pounds with a bald head, a mustache and tattoos. He might be a resident of Murrieta or Anaheim.

Anyone with information about the crash or the man who drove away should call the California Highway Patrol at (760) 757-1675 or (858) 637-3800.
