Chargers sign RB Shaun Draughn

Shaun Draughn has some playbook learning to do.

The running back worked out for the Chargers on Tuesday and was signed to a one-year deal. He is expected to be active Sunday against the Jaguars, working behind veteran Donald Brown and undrafted rookie Branden Oliver.

It’ll be a whirlwind.

Draughn takes the roster spot of veteran Danny Woodhead, placed on season-ending injured reserve with a broken fibula. He’ll be needed in short order, as Brown and Oliver are the only other healthy backs on the club.

Draughn went undrafted in 2011 out of North Carolina.

As a rookie, he spent time in Washington’s camp but has since bounced around a bit, working for the Chiefs, Ravens, Colts and Bears. San Diego marks his sixth team in four years. Chicago released the 6-foot, 205-pound back on Sept. 16.

For his career, he has 63 carries for 235 yards and two scores. He also has totaled 24 catches for 158 yards. Notably, Draughn (pronounced “drone”) is an option to return kicks, averaging 23.6 yards over 25 career attempts. Brown handled the role the first two weeks. Oliver did Sunday versus the Bills.
