Truck flies off freeway into Dave and Buster’s

A pickup flew through a freeway guardrail and plummeted about 50 feet into a Mission Valley business Sunday afternoon, a fire official said.

The yellow Ford F-250 drove off the freeway while transitioning from west Interstate 8 to north Interstate 805 about 3 p.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Capt. Chad Willenberg said. The truck scraped the east side of the Dave and Buster’s restaurant on Camino Del Rio North before landing on its wheels.

Firefighters cut away the pickup’s roof to free the driver, whose legs and chest were trapped under the dashboard, Willenberg said. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The restaurant facade was damaged, but the building’s structure wasn’t, the captain said.

One transition lane was closed while Caltrans repaired 20 to 30 feet of guardrail that was knocked away, a CHP dispatcher said.

CHP officers are investigating whether another car was involved in the crash.
