Branden Oliver to return for Chargers

Branden Oliver walked onto the field Saturday at the University at Buffalo Stadium, smiling and waving, dressed in UB blue and white.

He was introduced during the first quarter of a game versus Norfolk State. At halftime, he did an interview for a local news station.

Oliver had returned to the Buffalo area.

On Sunday, he will return.

The Chargers running back is expected to make his NFL regular-season debut against the Bills. While he may see limited snaps on offense, his predominant role likely will come on special teams. Sources said Oliver will return kickoffs, handling the role for running back Donald Brown.

The move should keep the veteran fresh.

Brown is set to have an expanded role on offense with Ryan Mathews recovers from a knee sprain. Oliver returned kicks during the preseason.

His debut just so happens to coincide with his return to the area.

A Miami native, Oliver calls Buffalo his “second home.” Many friends, family members and old coaches are expected to be at Ralph Wilson Stadium in support.

The 5-foot-6 undrafted rookie is UB’s all-time career rushing leader.

“It’s exciting for our players to see that kind of success,” UB coach Jeff Quinn said Sunday. “He is one of the hardest working players I’ve ever coached. You can’t tell the first snap from the last snap because he plays as hard as any player. ... We’re excited about having Bo here back in town. What a neat opportunity it is for him, his family, our football family here at UB and certainly, the San Diego Chargers.”
