Chargers-Bills game could be wet, windy

Share

The past two Chargers road trips haven’t lacked excitement.

Last month, they awoke in San Jose to the largest earthquake to hit the Bay Area in 25 years. On Sept. 8, the wettest day in Phoenix’s record resulted in flash floods, forcing the closure of major highways and evoking a statewide emergency.

This trip, there had to be something.

It’s going to blow.

The Chargers can expect possibly wet and definitely windy conditions Sunday when facing the Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium. This weather front is no flood or quake, but what it lacks in oddity it has in importance, posing a greater influence on game conditions than the other two natural events.

A 51 percent chance of rain exists at the 10 a.m. PT kickoff, according to the National Weather Service. It also projects a 16- to 20-mph surface wind, which could be more relevant, potentially impacting the passing game. On Saturday night, a 30 to 50 percent chance of thunderstorms was forecast. Those figures were reduced Sunday morning to less than 10 percent.

It remains to be seen how much a factor weather will have on this game. Temperature will be trivial; it’s forecast about 70 degrees. But in an outdoor stadium, the storm should hold more sway than the magnitude 6.0 Bay Area quake and record Arizona rain of previous trips.

Last Sunday, the Chargers endured triple-figure heat at field level during a home win against Seattle.
