New hurricane heads toward Baja

Share

In one of the busiest hurricane seasons in years, a new storm has roared to life off Mexico and is moving in the general direction of Baja California, which was pounded earlier this week by Hurricane Odile.

The new hurricane is called Polo. It is currently a category one system, but is expected to get larger on Thursday and Friday. The National Hurricane Center says it isn’t clear yet whether Polo will shift to the north a bit and affect southern Baja California. There’s a small chance that Polo will reach a position where it sends wave energy to San Diego.

Polo is the 16th named storm, and the 11th hurricane, to form in the east Pacific this season. Three -- Marie, Norbert and Odile -- have affected Southern California over the past few weeks, producing either rains, strong winds or humidity. Odile was largely responsible for the winds that toppled trees Tuesday in Spring Valley and Rancho San iego, and the wind and rain that shot through downtown San Diego and La Jolla during evening rush hour. Moisture from the storms has been tracking unusually far up Baja California because the ocean is warmer than normal.
