Heat to worsen through Wednesday

Share

Whoops.

The National Weather Service has revised its temperature forecast upwards, predicting that San Diego's Lindbergh Field will hit 90 degrees on Tuesday and 91 on Wednesday. Forecasters had said that the heat wave would ease a little on Tuesday and break by Wednesday, when humid air from Tropical Storm Odile arrived. But the high pressure system that created the heat wave hasn't faded as quickly as expected. And moisture from Odile is going to help push the temperature and humidity up on Wednesday. San Diego won't return to its seasonal high of 77 until Friday.

Inland valleys and foothills will be in the 90s and low 100s on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The overnight hours will also be uncomfortable. The ocean is unusually warm -- 70-75 degrees -- and its holding heat rather than allowing the region to cool off. Tuesday night's low in San Diego will be 74 -- only three degrees below the average high. It'll be 73 degrees on Wednesday night.

Forecasters say most of the moisture from Odile will flow into Arizona. It could spark severe thunderstorms on Wednesday, possibly affecting air travel between San Diego and Phoenix. Heavy rains also could hit parts of Arizona.

The surf also is on the way up. Solspot.com says waves will be in the 3' to 4' range Tuesday and Wednesday, resulting in a strong shore break and rip currents. The water temperature at Oceanside's offshore buoy was 75 on Monday.
