Adam Lambert returning to ‘American Idol’

Adam Lambert is returning to “American Idol,” the show that propelled the former San Diego singer to stardom after he came in second during “Idol’s” eight season in 2009.

Lambert will join show judges Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick, Jr., for Wednesday’s callback auditions at New York’s Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. He is filling in, at least for one day, for Keith Urban. The country-rock star and “Idol” judge is grieving the death of his father-in-law, Dr. Anthony Kidman, the father of actress Nicole Kidman.

The producers of “Idol” announced that Lambert will fill in for Urban on Twitter, writing: “Adam Lambert will be serving as guest judge at the NY auditions. Our thoughts are with Keith and his family during this difficult time.”

Lambert, 32, is a 2000 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School. Before moving to Los Angeles to seek stardom, he was a regular performer in an array of musical theater productions in San Diego.

In June, Lambert embarked on a 16-date North American tour with two of the three surviving members of the classic English rock band Queen, whose singer, Freddie Mercury, is one of Lambert’s key musical inspirations. That tour bypassed San Diego in favor of a July 3 show at the 18,000 capacity Los Angeles Forum.

Lambert left RCA Records last year after making two albums for the label. He has recently been working on his third album with Swedish producer and songwriter Max Martin, whose past credits include hits by Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Maroon 5 and others. Martin co-produced the hit single “Whataya Want From Me” and one other song from Lambert’s 2009 debut album, “For Your Entertainment.”
