Chargers waive RB Marion Grice

Share

Marion Grice was informed Monday morning he’s been waived.

It could mean a defensive lineman, very soon, will be added.

The Chargers parted with Grice, a rookie sixth-round pick from Arizona State, a source said. He competed this training camp for the No. 4 running back job with Branden Oliver, an undrafted rookie who ultimately won out. San Diego has a spot available on the practice squad, and it likely belongs to Grice should he clear waivers Tuesday afternoon.

First, the team is expected to announce Grice’s replacement on the 53-man roster.

A defensive lineman would be the likely bet. The Chargers have interest in adding depth at the position. Of their six linemen, two haven’t practiced in weeks. Defensive end Lawrence Guy (shoulder) and nose tackle Sean Lissemore (ankle) have been sidelined since the first and second exhibition game on Aug. 7 and 15, respectively.

UPDATE: The team signed nose tackle Ricardo Mathews.

A 10 a.m. Monday practice will offer a better sense of where each player is physically.

It is the team’s first on-field work of the week in advance to next Monday’s season opener in Arizona.

The Chargers are known to have reached out to former Broncos nose tackle Kevin Vickerson. But he could be one of multiple linemen contacted. The possibility of a different lineman, if indeed the direction the team is going, should not be discounted.
