CB Jason Verrett may miss time

Share

Jason Verrett must wait until Tuesday for answers.

The Chargers first-round cornerback will see a specialist for a left shoulder injury that flared up Thursday night against the Broncos. Verrett, not thought to play in the game, was a surprise active and didn’t finish, exiting in the second quarter and watching the second half with his left arm in a sling. He’s expected to miss time.

How much is unclear.

It seems fairly certain he won’t play Nov. 2 in Miami. What it looks like beyond that depends on to what degree, if at all, the shoulder worsened from having played through the injury. He underwent an MRI on Friday and will receive a second opinion.

Coach Mike McCoy, asked Friday if playing Verrett was a mistake, defended the decision.

“If he wasn’t ready to go, we wouldn’t have put him in there,” McCoy said. “He was ready to go. ... We thought he was ready to play.”

Verrett injured his shoulder Oct. 12 against Oakland.

He briefly exited that game in the third quarter but returned to seal a win with his first NFL interception. While not career-threatening, the damage later was found to be fairly substantial upon further evaluation.

He did not play Sunday against the Chiefs. Verrett was pulled during the fourth series of Thursday’s game after 24 snaps.
