3 big moments from Chargers vs. Broncos
Summing up the Chargers’ 35-21 defeat to Denver
Summing up the U-T San Diego's Chargers-Broncos in-game conversation in three quick hits.
1 -- The Chargers have finally run out of cornerbacks
You thought that happened last week against the Chiefs, right? When Brandon Flowers bowled into Jamaal Charles so hard he gave himself a concussion? Well Jason Verrett (who has been plagued by a shoulder injury) was a surprise addition to the game day lineup. Unfortunately, the rookie lasted less than a half before injuring his shoulder in the second quarter.
Richard Marshall and undrafted rookie Chris Davis replaced him and struggled against Peyton Manning and his lethal receiving corps.
As Michael Gehlken points out in this story, the Chargers are out of options at cornerback.
2 -- The fumble that went Denver's way
Right after Antonio Gates broke the Chargers' all-time receiving yards record, the Chargers thought they lucked out when they recovered a fumble by Andre Caldwell on Denver's kickoff return. Ladarius Green recovered and San Diego would have had the ball at Denver's 28, with the game tied 7-7.
But it was not to be. Officials overturned the call, saying Caldwell was down before the ball popped out. The play caused so much controversy that the NFL's VP of Officiating, Dean Blandino, took to Twitter to clarify that the officials got the call right.
The Broncos rolled downfield and and scored on a touchdown from Peyton Manning to Emmanuel Sanders (he had three on the night), taking a 14-7 lead and never looking back.
3 -- Weddle's highlight reel plays are for naught
Eric Weddle, the Chargers' captain and All-Pro safety, did everything physically possible to give his team a chance to win. But nothing, it seemed, was going the Chargers' way on this night.
Weddle's spectacular one-handed interception in the Chargers' end zone in the fourth quarter was called back for a holding penalty on Marcus Gilchrist.
Then, Weddle forced a fumble by punching the ball out of Sanders' arm, but the Broncos recovered.
Honorable mention: Jahleel Addae takes a big hit and stumbles around looking as if he's having a seizure.
He ultimately went back into the game.
