A 67-year-old Clairemont resident died when he went surfing off the coast of La Jolla Wednesday morning, officials said.

Stephen Saburo Fujii died at Calument Park in Bird Rock, the county Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Fujii was seen going in the water around 7 a.m. Two surfers who were walking along the beach a little later found him lying unconscious next to his surfboard at the base of the cliff. They found a doctor at the park, who called 911 about 7:15 a.m. and started CPR, authorities said.

Paramedics continued trying to revive Fujii, but were unable to do so.

A San Diego fire spokesman said it is believed that Fujii died of natural causes, but the cause of his death had not been determined as of Wednesday evening.
