10 reasons to see new Ballast Point brewery

Share

Last week, Ballast Point opened its new headquarters plant in Miramar, at 9045 Carroll Way.

Ten reasons why you should visit:

One. The place is mammoth -- 107,000 square feet.

Two. To put that into perspective: Ballast Point’s birthplace, the original Home Brew Mart, could fit inside the gift shop.

Three. More perspective: The previous main brewery, in Scripps Ranch, could fit inside the refrigerated storage area or cold box.

Four. The bottling line’s speed: 400 bottles a minute.

Five. The canning line’s speed: 400 cans a minute.

Six. Two copper showpieces — a 150-barrel brewing kettle and a mash lauter tun — were acquired from a brewery in Lohr, Germany.

Seven. The tasting room has 78 beers on tap.

Eight. The gift shop sells lots of liquid, but also tons of solid swag. Any disc golfers looking for an official Ballast Point golf disc ($17.95)?

Nine. Sculpin is the Point’s best-selling beer, followed by Pale Ale and Big Eye IPA. They’re all sold in the gift shop in bottles and growlers, and in the tasting room in pint glasses.

Ten. Grunion, a pale ale that won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival, was the result of an in-house brewing contest. Doug Pominville, a Ballast Point brewing adviser, wrote the winning recipe. While he’s usually at Home Brew Mart, you can sample his beer here.
