14 Chargers limited or out Wednesday

Defensive end Corey Liuget suffered a concussion Sunday.

Outside linebacker Dwight Freeney has a knee ailment.

Add them to the list for the Chargers, whose injury report was especially long Wednesday, even for them.

The team continues to navigate through a period in which it’s nowhere near full strength. Fourteen players were either limited or didn’t practice at all Wednesday, as San Diego began its first on-field preparation for Sunday’s game versus the Jets.

Liuget was diagnosed with a concussion following the win over the Jaguars.

That he could participate during portions of Wednesday’s practice bodes well for his status versus New York, although his status will continually be monitored over the week. Freeney’s knee injury is tentatively not expected to force him out of action.

The two Chargers were among the seven listed as limited.

Tight end Ladarius Green (hamstring), tight end/fullback David Johnson (shoulder), inside linebacker Donald Butler (shoulder), outside linebacker Jarret Johnson (shoulder) and cornerback Jason Verrett (hamstring) round out the group.

Green, Johnson and Verrett did not play Sunday. All have shown progress in their rehab.

Seven players missed Wednesday’s practice entirely.

Cornerback Shareece Wright (knee), center Rich Ohrnberger (back), outside linebacker Jerry Attaochu (hamstring), outside linebacker Reggie Walker (ankle), wide receiver Malcom Floyd (illness), inside linebacker Manti Te’o (foot) and running back Ryan Mathews (knee) were sidelined.

Wright injured his right knee Sunday in the second quarter. An MRI the next day offered relief, as the injury is not viewed to be significant. Still, he could miss some time.

If Ohrnberger cannot play Sunday, Doug Legursky is expected to get his second straight start.

“It’s been getting better,” said Ohrnberger, who didn’t practice last week, being listed as doubtful to face Jacksonville. “It’s going to continue to get better. The goal is to get on the field as soon as possible.”

Despite the injury report’s breadth, there are reasons to be optimistic when processing it.

It’s still early in the week, for one; many can be eased into action over the coming days. Also, one week after San Diego completed 10 transactions, including three signings to the 53-man roster, the Chargers were quiet on the transaction front Tuesday. They were not compelled to sign someone off the street.
