Chargers promote Ryan Miller to roster

A severe brain injury sidelined Ryan Miller in 2013.

On Saturday, he made an NFL roster for the first time since.

The Chargers promoted the guard-tackle from their practice squad, securing a third reserve lineman for Sunday’s game against the Rams. A source said that center Rich Ohrnberger, listed as questionable with an ankle and lingering back injury, won’t be active. The team waived Oceanside-native cornerback Richard Crawford in a corresponding move.

With Ohrnberger expected out, indications are Chris Watt will make his first career start. He’d be the fourth starting center this year for the Chargers, the others Nick Hardwick, Ohnrberger and Doug Legursky.

Miller was a 2012 Browns fifth-round pick from Colorado.

He spent all of last season on injured reserve following a training-camp concussion.

The 6-foot-7, 320-pound lineman worked in camp this year with the Broncos, was cut after the preseason and, after a tryout with the Chargers this month, was signed days later to the practice squad. His promotion came in favor of versatile tackle-guard Jeremiah Sirles and guard Craig Watts, two undrafted rookies who’ve been with the team since shortly after the draft.

Sirles was thought to be the favorite for call-up.

The Chargers are high on the former Nebraska Cornhusker; however, Miller has been around the league a bit longer and offers more size. Miller enters Sunday, though, with only 11 career offensive snaps, all coming in the season finale of his rookie year.

On Friday, McCoy said Sirles has done a “great job of making the most of his opportunities.”

“A good, young player that has a bright future for us,” he added.
