Dwight Freeney slams ‘horrible’ decision

No league fine became of an illegal hit delivered Sunday.

That doesn’t sit well with Dwight Freeney.

The Chargers outside linebacker stood up for a teammate Friday upon learning that, per a league source, the NFL didn’t fine Raiders running back Darren McFadden for a pick play on Kavell Conner. McFadden lowered his shoulder into the Chargers inside linebacker, knocking him to the ground and briefly out of the game during a 13-7 San Diego win.

The hit resulted in a declined penalty for offensive pass interference.

Its enforcement would’ve backed up the Raiders 2 yards from their own 4-yard line, half the distance to the goal.

A number of Chargers afterward considered the hit to be dirty. From the NFL, Freeney hoped for more.

“Unbelievable. That’s horrible. That’s absolutely horrible,” Freeney said. “How did he not get fined for that? That just tells you what type of league this is, an offensive player league. I’m not saying they only care about it, but they are heavily slanted toward offensive protection, not defensive protection.

“He is a defenseless player. He didn’t know where that hit’s coming from or what’s happening. … If it was defense, he might have gotten ejected.”

Other players, Conner included, expected a fine.

Coach Mike McCoy declined comment on the play, saying he wanted to avoid a fine himself.
