A border officer at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry shot at a vehicle that was being pursued by police after a carjacking incident Saturday morning, authorities said.

The driver did not appear to be hit by the officer’s round and was able to flee in to Mexico, police said. The southbound lanes of the border crossing were closed for several hours but were reopened before 2 p.m.

The incident began at 9:12 a.m. when a man forced a woman and her 7-year-old son out of their pickup in front of a store on Border Village Road in San Ysidro. The man got into the silver Toyota Tacoma and drove off, San Diego police said.

Police followed the pickup, which had a motorcycle in the bed of the truck, at high speeds on state Route 905 toward the border crossing. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers tried to stop the vehicle but the driver ignored orders to stop, police said.

The driver turned into the border crossing where a border officer shot a round at the vehicle, police said. The driver, who did not appear to be hit, continued driving into Mexico.

Mexican customs officers chased the vehicle, but the driver got away. The pickup was found later in Tijuana. It was unoccupied.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the San Diego Police Department at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
