August to get off to toasty start

Share

The temperature has been significantly above normal for the past nine months in San Diego. August will begin the same way. As for the humidity ... you don't want to know.

Monsoon moisture will stream into San Diego County at least through Saturday, helping raise daytime highs to 80 degrees or so in coastal areas not affected by the marine layer. The average high this time of year at Lindbergh Field in San Diego is 76. The relative humidity just east of the beach will be in the 40-50 percent range Friday and Saturday afternoon. There's a small chance that unstable air will drift over the mountains and toward the beach, sparking the kind of thunderstorms the region experienced on Sunday.

Inland weather will be breathtaking, and not in a good way. The National Weather Service says places such as Ramona could hit 96 degrees on Friday and 92 on Saturday. Thunderstorms are possible, though they're more likely over the deserts.

Whew: Final figures are quite yet available, but it appears that the average monthly temperature for July will be about 73.6 degrees at Lindbergh, or about 3.6 degrees above normal. The airport has recorded above average monthly temperatures every month since November 2013.

Surf: Waves will be in the 2' to 3' range into Sunday. Ocean temps: 68-71.
