Bomb squad picks up training ordnance on I-8

Share

A sheriff’s bomb squad retrieved a training round of ordnance along the shoulder of Interstate 8 in Buckman Springs Wednesday.

Someone flagged down a sheriff’s deputy about 10:50 a.m. to point out a suspicious-looking object on the right shoulder, sheriff’s Lt. Clayton Lisk said.

The deputy said it looked like something from World War II. California Highway Patrol officers then went out to evaluate the item.

They were staying 200 yards away while they waited for the bomb squad, but no freeway lanes were closed, CHP Officer Tommy Doerr said.

After some hours, two members of the sheriff’s bomb squad got there and figured out the mortar-type round was a harmless training device.
