Weezer & Geezer an inspired musical pair
Call it serendipity, a happy coincidence, or a minor cosmic gaffe, but intrepid San Diego rock fans this week can hear both Weezer and Geezer perform here. (Ticket information for both concerts appears at the conclusion of this article.)
Now in its 22nd year, the snarky Los Angeles pop-rock quartet Weezer plays Saturday. Their concert is part of the ongoing Del Mar Racetrack Concert Series, which last year also featured Weezer.
The band, led by by Rivers Cuomo, recently released “Back to the Shack,” Weezer’s first new song since 2010. It’s a prelude to their album “Everything Will Be Alright In The End,” which is due in September and was produced by ex-Cars leader Rick Ocasek. (Hey, kids! The Cars were big between 1978 and 1987. In 1989, Ocasek married supermodel Paulina Porzikova, his third wife. He also produced Weezer’s 1994 debut album.)
Now in its ninth year, the snarky San Diego pop-rock quartet Geezer will play Thursday night at downtown’s Tin Roof. Geezer is, of course, a tribute band that — as part of its broad and varied musical palette — re-imagines Weezer as senior citizens.
Or, is it re-imagines Weezer’s song as performed by senior citizens, one of whom has a really hot trophy wife who likes to dress up as a naughty nurse? (Hey, kids! Geezer leader Adam Gimbel is not married to a super model, but he once knew a woman named Paulina. He is also the mastermind of Cover Me Badd, the 14-year-old cover group that spawned Geezer, Geezer From The Crypt and Rabbi Gimbel’s Chanukah Time Revue/The Jews Explosion.)
In 2008, Geezer opened a concert here for Weezer at SDSU. At least a few men named Rick attended. Thanks to carefully applied makeup and retro clothing, Geezer’s members looked like contemporaries of long-deceased rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Buddy Holly, the namesake of Weezer’s 1994 breakthrough single, “Buddy Holly.”
Serendipity, indeed!
