The School of Arts is part of the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences. The school will be home to programs in the Visual and Performing Arts Department, an interdisciplinary major featuring subjects that students may specialize in, such as arts and technology, dance studies, music, theater and visual arts/visual culture.

The school will enhance the development of the university’s arts programs for the benefit of students and the greater community, said Adam Shapiro, dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences.

“The mission of the School of Arts is to provide an inclusive collaborative community where artists, scholars and students actively engage in developing artistic practices, critical thinking, cultural intelligence and creativity,” Shapiro said in a statement.

Kilpatrick’s move to Cal State San Marcos is not her first experience with the CSU system. Previously, she served as a special assistant to the provost, and professor and chairwoman in the Department of English at California State University Channel Islands. She was one of 12 founding Channel Islands faculty members responsible for the development of initial policies and procedures for the university. She worked on curriculum creation for degree programs, including the bachelor of arts in Performing Arts.

“I’ve had the opportunity of starting programs before, but the new School of Arts is really something special to me and to the campus,” Kilpatrick said in a statement.

Kilpatrick earned a doctorate in literature from University of California Santa Cruz and a master’s in English and American Literature from Cal State University Fresno.
