Here’s what you need to know before heading to the fields:

When to go: The Carlsbad Flower Fields officially open Saturday, and the season continues through May 11. The flowers are at their peak from mid-March to mid-April, though weather can cause variations. Call ahead or check online to get a detailed report.

What to wear: You’re visiting a working farm, so wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting dusty. Because the weather varies so much, bringing a sun hat, and a sweater is recommended.

Exploring: There are different ways to check out the ranunculuses, which are planted in neat rows, according to color. You can walk along the designated dirt paths, which do have a slight incline. Or, for $5 ($3 for children), hop on a wagon that’s pulled by an antique tractor. These rides are recommended for those who have trouble walking.

Beyond ranunculuses: After you’ve exhausted all your photo opportunities out in the field, there’s still plenty to do throughout the expansive complex. There’s a fragrant sweet-pea maze, a cymbidium orchid greenhouse, artists, gardens, a poinsettia display, a mining area, a water-wise garden area and a whimsical Santa’s playground. Some activities require an additional fee, so have some cash handy, especially if you have little ones in tow.

Where to eat: There are vending machines and some food vendors on site (just try to resist those strawberry shakes). But picnics are also encouraged, and there are several lunch spots and benches where you can enjoy food from home.

Special events: The Carlsbad Flower Fields host a variety of special events throughout the season. Some of the highlights include Kid’s Day on March 30; Bluegrass Day on April 6; Zydeco Day on April 20; and a Mother’s Day celebration on May 11. For a complete list, go to theflowerfields.com.
