12-year-old riding new scooter fatally hit by car

UPLAND, Calif. (AP) — A 12-year-old boy riding a motorized scooter he got for Christmas has been fatally struck by a car in front of his home in Southern California.

KCBS-TV reports (https://cbsloc.al/1D0evpN ) that Roman Martinez was riding his scooter in the road and was not in a crosswalk when he was fatally struck Friday.

The California Highway Patrol says he was flown by helicopter to Loma Linda Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle stopped and remained at the scene.

Officers do not believe the driver was under the influence but are evaluating whether excessive speed was a factor.
