Ryan Lindley played youth, prep and college football in San Diego.

On Sunday morning, he entered the next phase.

The former San Diego State and El Capitan High quarterback was signed to the Chargers practice squad. Eight others were added to the 10-man roster, including wide receiver Javontee Herndon, outside linebacker Cordarro Law and guard-tackle Jeremiah Sirles.

Lindley was a 2012 sixth-round draft pick.

Waived last week, he’s spent his entire career in Arizona, the team’s Week 1 opponent on Sept. 8. He also has cardinal knowledge of the NFC West, a division the Chargers play this season, but that familiarity is said to be entirely coincidental.

He is a quarterback the team likes and wants to develop. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich coached the Cardinals’ wide receivers during Lindley’s rookie year.

Lindley is the only player on the practice squad who wasn’t in camp with the team.

Wide receiver Torrence Allen, guard Craig Watts, defensive end Chas Alecxih, cornerback Greg Ducre and safety Adrian Phillips also were signed to the squad. It was an important development for the team that Allen and especially Herndon both cleared waivers and could remain with the club, providing some insurance with San Diego keeping five, not six, wide receivers on its 53-man roster.
