Vincent Brown not on Chargers’ 53

Share

Vincent Brown should play somewhere this season.

It likely won’t be with the Chargers.

The wide receiver was informed Saturday he won’t be on the team’s 53-man roster, a source said. Brown suffered a calf injury July 25 on the second day of training camp and hadn’t practiced since. San Diego chose to keep five wide receivers.

This move, due to Brown’s injury, was not a straight cut.

He was waived-injured, which means he is on waivers until Sunday at 9 a.m. If a team claims him, he’ll join that roster under his current contract structure. If unclaimed, Brown will be placed on injured reserve. He’d then be expected to sign an injury settlement and enter free agency.

Interest should exist around the league.

Brown, a 2011 third-round pick from San Diego State, has good film to his name. Its most impressive reels come before a broken ankle suffered during the 2012 preseason. This was slated to be the final season under his rookie contract.

Keenan Allen, Malcom Floyd, Eddie Royal, Dontrelle Inman and Seyi Ajirotutu form the 2014 depth chart at wide receiver. Undrafted rookies Javontee Herndon and Torrence Allen were waived Saturday and are expected to be signed to the practice squad should they clear waivers.

Brown has 60 career receptions for 801 yards and three touchdowns.

He started 18 games in 2013, including two in the playoffs.
