A 22-year-old Marine riding a motorcycle was fatally injured Thursday in a hit-and-run collision in Oceanside, and a suspect was later arrested, police said.

Police responded at 8 a.m. to the collision on Douglas Drive, near San Luis Rey Avenue, Oceanside police traffic Sgt. Ignacio Lopez said.

The motorcycle collided with a white Budget Rental box truck. Both vehicles were northbound on Douglas. The truck was making a U-turn ahead of the motorcycle and the rider was unable to stop in time, Lopez said.

The motorcyclist suffered major head trauma and was flown by medical helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he died about 4:30 p.m. He was identified as Brandon Joseph Bizarro.

The driver later returned to the crash site, where he was arrested and booked into Vista jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, Lopez said.

It was not yet known if either alcohol or speed were factors in the collision, the sergeant said.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call Accident Investigator Bryan Hendrix at (760) 435-4882.
