For a second year in a row, UC San Diego has been ranked No. 14 among the world’s top universities in an annual listing by the Center for World-Class Universities.

University officials have said the rankings are particularly meaningful in academic circles because they are based on such factors as number of alumni and staff who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals and can help its international reputation. Since 2003, UC San Diego has placed 13th, 14th or 15th on the list.

“It is an honor for UC San Diego to once again be recognized as one of the world’s premier universities,” Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said in a statement. “Our extraordinary faculty, bright students and talented staff all contribute to UC San Diego’s excellence in education, research and patient care.”

The rankings are compiled by the center, which is part of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. It looks at factors such as the number of researchers who are highly cited and the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science.

In addition to the overall ranking, in the broad-subject category, UC San Diego’s life sciences programs were ranked 11th, engineering was ranked 18th, clinical medicine and pharmacy were ranked 22nd, social sciences were ranked 23rd and natural sciences and mathematics were ranked 26th.

In selected subject rankings, it ranked 11th in computer science, 18th in chemistry, 18th in economics and 22nd in mathematics.

More than 1,200 universities were evaluated with the center publishing a list of the top 500.

Harvard University is No. 1 on the list for the 12th year.

San Diego State University is shown as being between 301 and 400 on the list, with its programs in social science and economics/business also being cited.
