Showers might affect Padre’s game

Share

Unstable air from Baja California is spreading across San Diego County, spreading sporadic showers as far west as the coast, says the National Weather Service. The rain blew through Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley, where a record 18,000 people turned out for Saturday’s Chargers FanFest 2014. Heavy showers also have washed across I-5 at Oceanside. Forecasters say light rain could fall, on-and-off, this evening, possibly affecting the San Diego Padre’s home game with the Atlanta Braves. The game begins at 5:40 p.m. at Petco.

Lightning has been reported near Vista, Santa Ysabel and the Cuyamaca Mountains.

Strong thunderstorms moved through parts of East County on Friday. Rain triggered a rock slide that partially blocked northbound Sunrise Highway, near I-8, says the California Highway Patrol. There were reports of heavy thunder and lightning in Pine Valley.

Ready.gov says that if you’re caught outside during a thunderstorm:

  1. Avoid hilltops, open fields, the beach or a boat on the water.
  2. Take shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas.
  3. Avoid natural lightning rods such as a tall, isolated tree in an open area.
  4. Avoid contact with anything metal—tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts, golf clubs, and bicycles.
  5. If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle.
