Cubic expands Bay Area Clipper card network

Share

Cubic Corp’s transportation arm, which makes electronic payment systems for public transportation agencies, received a $7.5 million add-on contract with the San Francisco Bay Area’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission to expand the Clipper card fare payment system to several suburban transit systems.

The larger geographic footprint for the Clipper card system, which San Diego-based Cubic built and operates, will enhance travel options for commuters in parts of the East and North Bay, the company said.

Agencies joining Clipper later this year include the Marin Transit, Napa VINE, Fairfield and Vacaville City Coach bus systems, as well as San Francisco Bay Ferry’s Vallejo-San Francisco route.

By the end of 2015, the Clipper card system will extend to the Livermore-Amador Valley Transit Authority bus network and Contra Costa County transit agencies. Additional transit agencies are scheduled to join in 2016.

Clipper cards offer electronic payment for riders on many of the Bay Area major transit systems today, including Bay Area Rapid Transit, or BART. Nearly half of all Bay Area transit trips are paid for today using Clipper cards.

Under the contract, Cubic will install Clipper fare collection equipment on all East Bay and North Bay operators’ buses, install retail devices and handheld card readers for fare inspection and install wireless networks to support the uploading and downloading of Clipper data at all bus garages.
