Branches unveiled for library tutors

Share

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Tuesday the list of 18 library branches where he proposes to add after-school tutoring programs and the four branches where he’s proposing sharply expanded hours.

The proposals are part of a budget for the new fiscal year that Faulconer unveiled last week, but the specific library branches hadn’t been revealed.

The tutoring program would provide homework help and skills training to students. Many of the selected branches are in low-income areas because the program targets students with low standardized test scores.

The branches are downtown’s central library, Rolando, Kensington, City Heights, North Clairemont, Linda Vista, San Carlos, Pacific Beach, Scripps Ranch, North Park, Otay Mesa, San Ysidro, Logan Heights, Mountain View, Serra Mesa, Oak Park, Skyline and Valencia Park.

Flanked by children and city officials gathered at the Logan Heights branch for the announcement, Faulconer said Tuesday that the branches were selected carefully.

“It’s targeted at communities where we’re striving to raise student achievement,” he said.

The four branches where Saturday and Sunday hours would be added are Carmel Valley, Mission Valley, North University and Otay Mesa. The city’s other 32 branches would see increases of at least four hours per week.
