18 Die in traffic accidents in central Mexico
Mexico City, Apr 20 (EFE). At least 18 people died in two traffic accidents in Mexico state, which surrounds the Federal District and forms part of the Mexico City metropolitan area, a spokesman for the state Attorney General's Office told Efe Sunday.
The first accident occurred on Saturday night in the city of Naucalpan, where three vehicles, including an SUV carrying a family, collided, killing 11 people and injuring 11 others.
"Nine bodies were found inside the SUV and two others on the roadway," the AG's office spokesman said.
The accident was apparently caused by an automobile that swerved into oncoming traffic, the official said.
The second accident happened when three vehicles crashed on Saturday night in Zinacantepec, a city near Toluca, the state capital, the AG's office spokesman said.
Seven people were killed and six others injured in the accident, the official said.
The crash occurred on the TolucaTemascaltepec highway near the town of San Juan de las Huertas, the official said, adding that the victims were travelers returning home.
The people injured in the two accidents were transported to the Red Cross hospitals in Nacucalpan and Lomas Verdes, both in Mexico state, and in the Federal District, the AG's office spokesman said.
AG's office investigators are trying to determine the cause of the two accidents and are obtaining statements to identify who bears responsibility, the AG's office spokesman said.
