Chamber endorses Zapf, Cate

The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce endorsed on Tuesday Councilwoman Lorie Zapf for Council District 2 and community leader Chris Cate for Council District 6.

Former San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, the chamber’s chief executive, said the two Republican candidates would help create jobs and bolster the local economy.

“Lorie has been a leader on many of the chamber’s priorities such as fiscal reforms at City Hall and streamlining government so that it’s efficient and effective for all San Diegans,” Sanders said in a news release. “She is the only candidate with the experience to keep San Diego on the right track.”

Sanders said Cate’s work with many community organizations has been impressive.

“I’m supporting Chris because he has the leadership and experience to work with our new Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the rest of the council to fully implement voter approved reforms managed competition and pension reform,” Sanders said. “The leadership he displayed from day one on these issues is representative of the proactive approach he will bring to the City Council.”

Zapf, who now represents District 6, must run for re-election in District 2 because council boundaries were redrawn in 2012. Councilman Ed Harris, who represents District 2, can’t run for re-election because he was appointed last week to finish out Mayor Faulconer’s council term.
