— Detroit Tigers right hander Max Scherzer and Los Angeles Dodgers southpaw Clayton Kershaw were selected as this year's Cy Young Award winners in the American League and National League, respectively.

Scherzer, 29, received 28 of 30 firstplace votes after posting a record of 213 making him last season's only 20game winner and finishing fifth in the AL with a 2.90 ERA.

"It's unbelievable. It just vindicates everything I've done," Scherzer said on a conference call after the vote by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

"I've been working so hard all these years to get better and better. I think I took a big step forward in 2013," he added.

Japanese hurlers Yu Darvish and Hisashi Iwakuma, who pitch for the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners, finished second and third, respectively.

The 25yearold Kershaw, meanwhile, handily won the NL award after a dominating season in which he put up an MLBbest 1.83 ERA. His winloss record of 169 was deceiving because he received little run support in many of the games he lost.

"This is such a cool thing. I can't even explain what it means to me. It really is a huge honor," Kershaw, who received 29 of 30 firstplace votes, told the MLB Network.

The only other NL pitcher to receive a firstplace vote was the St. Louis Cardinals' Adam Wainwright.

Kershaw also won baseball's top pitching honor in 2011, while Scherzer's Cy Young Award was his first.

Both pitchers led their teams to the playoffs, although the Tigers and Dodgers both came up one round short of the World Series.
